Have you ever had one of those days where nothing spectacular happened? For real. Like nothing happened. No one called or texted me with life-changing news. I didn’t accomplish any huge goals for the day. None of my prayers were answered in some exciting way, no mountaintop moment, and no dramatic revelation from God while drinking my iced coffee.
It was just a good day.
You know the one. The coffee tasted better. Some household chores got done. I laughed. My favorite song was on while I was cleaning. Dinner hit just right. The leaves looked greener, the sunshine was just right. And later the clouds moved in and the rain started, and it was just the most relaxing. You could smell Autumn in the air. And you end the night curled up on the couch in some comfy clothes with your favorite person watching something you’ve seen 47 million times before.
Just an ordinary day. And I liked it. One of those perfect days where in the middle of it you think to yourself and give praise, God, thank you. This was a really good day.
God in the Ordinary
And ya know what? I think that we sometimes get so used to looking for God in the big moments that we miss Him in the little ones.
We look while waiting for an answer, walking through trials, standing on top of the mountain, or trying to figure out why exactly we are in the valley and what He is teaching us. And yes, all those are times we should look for God in, but what about in the ordinary day when life is just….good?
What about the days when there isn’t a lesson hiding around every corner? Or waiting for the other shoe to drop? When you can simply sit back for a minute and think, You know what, Lord? This is a good day.
Maybe we need a theology for those days too.
“I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man.”
Ecclesiastes 3:12–13I love this. Eat. Drink. Enjoy your work. Be joyful. Recognize that each and every day, even the ordinary ones, the regular Tuesdays, are a gift from God.
Received with Thanksgiving
We tend to over complicate things so much that we forget God created things for us to enjoy. Good food is good. Laughing until your stomach hurts is good. Sitting outside when it’s not approximately 7 million degrees is good. A quiet moment with your iced coffee and your Bible is good. Surrounding yourself with people you love is good. Even sitting on the couch in your pajamas doing absolutely nothing productive for a little while can be good.
“For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.”
1 Timothy 4:4There it is. That right there. Received with thanksgiving. That is the difference.
Enjoying the things that God has given us isn’t the same thing as worshipping them. We don’t have to be guilty for enjoying our lives. We don’t have to turn every good moment into some giant lesson before we are allowed to appreciate it. We can enjoy it and say “Thank You God. That was really good.”
And maybe that is worship too. Not because the coffee is sacred, or the tacos we ate are somehow making us more sanctified. But because we know Who gave us the ability to enjoy any of it in the first place.
James 1:17 tells us that every good and every perfect gift is from above.
Every good gift. Every perfect gift.
The Tiny Gifts
I know that some of us, myself included, tend to think of big things when reading this. Marriage. Family. Salvation. Provision. Huge things that we automatically recognize as blessings. But what about the tiny ones?
- The sunshine shining through the trees early in the cool of the morning.
- The song that came on right when you needed it.
- The friend who sent the funny ridiculous meme.
- The first hint of fall in the air.
- Clean sheets after a refreshing shower.
- Really good hot salty french fries.
- Laughing with my husband over something that wouldn’t be funny to literally anyone else.
And although those things aren’t the gospel. They aren’t our source of joy. Jesus is that.
But maybe knowing Jesus is exactly what allows us to enjoy those things for what they really are: little gifts from a holy and perfect God.
A Whole Lot of Tuesdays
I’m trying to not be so focused on waiting on the next big thing, that I miss out on life God has put right in front of me. I want to be content and joyful on an ordinary day. You know the ones.
Mondays when it feels like the alarm goes off too early. Wednesdays when there’s laundry and dishes that need to be done. Fridays when we’re trying to figure out what is for dinner. And Tuesdays when nothing remarkable happens.
“I know there will be mountain tops and valleys. Scripture never promises otherwise. But in between those mountain tops and valleys are a whole lot of Tuesdays. And I don’t want to miss those.”
Summer MartinI want to be able to thank God for the tiny things that probably won't matter to anyone else. And honestly, we don’t need something extraordinary to happen before we praise God. Sometimes you can just crawl into bed at the end of the day, think back over absolutely nothing remarkable, smile and say: “Lord, today was really good. Thank you.”. Because an ordinary day enjoyed with thanksgiving is anything but ordinary.
